Butler County has been recognized by the Iowa Department of Corrections as operating one of the state’s top-performing jails.

The Department of Corrections says Butler County was honored in the small jail category, which includes facilities with up to 30 beds.

The DOC says the recognition highlights jails that demonstrate excellence in operations and management, while ensuring the safety and well-being of both inmates and staff.

Under Iowa Code 356, all Iowa jails undergo annual inspections conducted by the Department of Corrections to ensure compliance with state jail standards. Inspections include a review of daily documentation, a facility tour, interactions with inmates and an operational review by a DOC inspector.

DOC Director Dr. Beth Skinner says Iowa is one of only 21 states where jail standards are overseen by the Department of Corrections, crediting jail staff statewide for strong management practices.
