State-led plans to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence are coming into focus, and state officials are inviting Iowans to help shape the celebration with events across the state.

Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer, co-chair of the America 250 initiative in Iowa, says the anniversary is an opportunity to spotlight Iowa’s entrepreneurs, educators, artists and innovators, along with the state’s attractions and events.

July 4, 2026, will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Most activities are expected to lead up to next year’s Independence Day weekend, though a statewide Harvest Festival is planned for Oct. 24.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says the festival will highlight the role farming has played in shaping both Iowa’s history and the nation.
