RadioOnTheGo News is warning listeners after recording a suspicious phone call from someone claiming to represent the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The call was received by OnTheGoMedia President and General Manager Shawn Dietz. It appeared to come from a local number — a 319 area code with a 315 Anamosa prefix — but raised red flags when the caller began asking about a mortgage balance.
“Just give me a quick minute here to see if this would be a good fit for your situation.”
Dietz questioned the caller and confirmed they were claiming to be with the VA. The caller continued pressing for financial details.
“SPAM AI: Now, about how much would you estimate—
Shawn Dietz: Did you say you were calling from the VA?
SPAM: Yes.
SD: You’re calling from the VA.
SPAM: Yeah.
SD: And you want to know about my mortgage.
SPAM: The reason we’re calling is because we may be able to put you in a better situation with your mortgage. So what’s the balance that you owe on that again?”
Officials stress the VA does not cold-call veterans to request mortgage information or refinancing details. Scammers often spoof local phone numbers and may use advanced voice technology to sound convincing. Listeners are urged not to share personal or financial information on unsolicited calls and instead contact their bank, lender or the VA using trusted numbers.
Suspected scams can be reported to local law enforcement or the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Authorities say as scam technology improves, skepticism remains a key defense. More on this story is available at RadioOnTheGo.com.
