The Iowa Senate has voted to name the American Cream Draft Horse the official horse of Iowa. Senator Annette Sweeney of Iowa Falls says the breed was developed in Hardin, Hamilton and Webster counties and is the only draft horse breed that originated in the United States or Canada.
American Cream Draft Horses have a cream-colored coat and a white mane. The breed is one of several work horses that once pulled plows and harvesting equipment for Iowa farmers before tractors became common.
An effort to name the American Cream Draft Horse the state horse of Iowa failed to win House approval in 2024 after senators overwhelmingly voted for the proposal.
