North Butler Schools to eliminate 3-year-old preschool program amid budget cuts

clarksville-2-2

The North Butler Community School District announced it will discontinue its 3-year-old preschool program starting in the 2026–27 academic year, citing ongoing financial pressures and reductions in state funding.

In a letter to families, Superintendent Bryan Boysen said the decision came after an extensive review of the district’s projected budget. With limited resources, district leaders determined that maintaining core K–12 programs and required services must take priority.

The preschool program for 3-year-olds is not mandated by the state, making it one of the few areas where reductions could be made without affecting required educational offerings. According to Boysen, the program can no longer be sustained through the district’s general fund.

“To preserve the integrity of our core programs, we must make difficult choices,” Boysen wrote, emphasizing that decisions impacting young learners are not made lightly.

The district has faced tightening financial conditions in recent years, a trend affecting many rural public schools across the state. Officials noted that while the preschool program will be eliminated, the district remains committed to providing high-quality education within its financial means.

District leaders expressed appreciation for community understanding and support as they navigate the transition.
