Crisis Intervention Service representatives Andrea DeGroote and Rachel Connor are encouraging those around Franklin County to support survivors of sexual assault throughout the year and during the month of April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
DeGroote says that Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a time for communities to stand with survivors and commit to change.
She says survivors often struggle to speak out due to fear or stigma, but support and understanding can make a powerful difference in their healing.
She adds that raising awareness helps break the silence around sexual violence, challenges harmful myths and promotes education about consent and respect. It also connects survivors to resources and reminds them they are not alone.
A number of businesses around Hampton are participating in their monthlong community awareness project by hanging teal ribbons and displaying teal merchandise in their windows.
DeGroote says supporting survivors starts with believing them.
Crisis Intervention Service provides resources for a total of 15 counties, including Franklin County.
