Ackley has a new mayor following action by the city council Wednesday night. Council members appointed Mike Abbas to fill the vacancy created when former mayor Mike Nuss stepped down effective March 27. Abbas, who presided over the meeting as mayor pro tem, was sworn in after the vote and then resigned his council seat.

The council also approved several hires as the city addresses staffing needs. Carrie Stahl was hired as deputy city clerk, Brent Kuper as public works supervisor, and Jeff Gronewold as a seasonal public works assistant.

Additional action included approving employee wage adjustments and a street closure for the annual car show, along with ongoing discussion of city projects and pool staffing ahead of summer.
