Early spring wildflowers begin blooming across the area

Residents in the RadioOnTheGo area are starting to see signs of spring in local woodlands, as early-season wildflowers begin to bloom.

On the latest “Outdoors in North Iowa” podcast, Butler County Naturalist Annette Wittrock says these early blooms, known as spring ephemerals, play an important role in the ecosystem.

“Ephemeral is a word that means lasting a short time and these flowers definitely embody that word,” says Wittrock. “They’re the first flowers to bloom in the spring and early bees and butterflies of the year usually depend on them for food.”

Wittrock says one of the earliest and most unique plants is skunk cabbage, which can generate its own heat and even melt surrounding snow as it grows.

She also highlighted other early bloomers like hepatica and bloodroot, noting their historical uses but cautioning against harvesting them.

“You can’t harvest these out of the wild for any reason, whether it’s medicinal or to put on your property” says Wittrock. “And so in Butler County, they’re on our property and on private property. So leave them where you find them and tread lightly if you do choose to go out there and take some pictures.”

Wittrock says Butler County campgrounds are not yet open but could be ready soon, depending on weather conditions.
