All five campgrounds managed by Butler County Conservation are open for the 2026 season following spring preparations by staff.

During a recent “Outdoors in North Iowa” podcast, Naturalist Annette Wittrock says crews completed seasonal work to restore services and prepare sites for visitors after winter.

“Today I do get to say,  officially, that all five of the campgrounds managed by Butler County Conservation are open for the 2026 camping season,” Wittrock says. “So our staff was out, they worked their magic to get the water and electricity turned back on, the bathrooms cleaned and everything ready for campers.”

Wittrock says only minor issues were discovered during the process, with one small plumbing problem quickly repaired.

The county manages campgrounds at Beaver Meadows in Parkersburg, Camp Comfort near Greene, Wunsch Memorial Park in Greene, Heery Woods south of Clarksville and Shell Rock Park near Shell Rock. All offer a mix of electric and non-electric sites, along with modern restroom and shower facilities.

Some improvements were completed ahead of the season, while other work continues following storm damage from last year.

Wittrock says additional cleanup and repairs will continue in some areas, but overall, the parks are ready for campers.

“Wunsch Memorial Park in Greene got a full electrical upgrade at the end of last season,” Wittrock says. “So there are now 50 amp hookups at those sites. And Shell Rock will look a little different this year after the windstorm last summer took out 20 or more trees that also crushed our playground there and damaged the shelter house.”

Reservations for campsites are available from May 1 through mid-October and can be made at mycountyparks.com. On-site payment options are also available.
