NICL Boys Tennis Tournament happening Tuesday

The North Iowa Cedar League Boys Tennis Tournament will take place Tuesday, hosted by Columbus Catholic at Byrnes Park.

It’ll be a five-team tournament, with round-robin matches at each of the nine seeds. AP Coach Grant Wedeking says they’ll be prepared for the grind of the long day of action.

“Thankfully, it’s not looking like it’s going to be a very hot one,” Wedeking says. “There’s times where you play 88 games that day and it’s 85 degrees, and that takes a toll on your body. But it’s not looking like that’s going to be the case. So heat shouldn’t be a problem, but either way, it is a long time to play on your legs. So our guys have got to prepare prior to that, just taking care of themselves in that way. And when we get there, we’re going to have to be focused and locked in mentally and physically, because like I said, we beat Columbus 5-4 in the dual indoors. But that does not mean we’re guaranteed anything going into that day. They can beat us literally at every seed if we’re not careful. So we’re going to have to come in focused and goal-oriented that we don’t let them flip matches on us.”

Among the possible favorites, AP freshman Troy Neymeyer is undefeated at #3 singles, and Tyler Wedeking is 6-2 at #1 singles.

Grundy Center’s Oliver Del Castillo is 7-1 at #4 singles and Lincoln Lewis is 7-1 at #5 singles.

Action will start at 9:00 a.m. and run throughout the day.
