The Aplington-Parkersburg summer sports teams went 1-2 in home NICL-Central games Monday. The baseball team won Game 1 3-2 and fell 5-4 in Game 2. In a single softball game, Denver won 12-2 in four innings.
Each team scored once in the first inning of the first baseball game, and Denver added another in the third for a 2-1 lead. In the sixth, Sully Janssen blasted a two-run homer to right field, and the Falcons held the Cyclones without a baserunner in the seventh to finish off the win. Sully Janssen pitched the complete game with three strikeouts and one walk, and had two hits to lead offensively.
In Game 2, AP took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the third inning, including a Sully Janssen RBI that drove in Preston Janssen, followed by Wes Shirk scoring on a passed ball. Denver scored in three of the next four innings, and the Falcons could only register single tallies in the sixth and seventh, stranding the tying run on third in the seventh. Preston Janssen pitched 6.1 innings with five strikeouts and two walks. None of the four runs were earned. AP will host West Marshall Tuesday at 7:00.
Denver scored early and often in the softball game, including four in the first and three in the second. AP got on the board in the second when Stella Walker singled to drive in a run, followed by an Eva Walker RBI. But the Cyclones added five in the fourth inning to end the game via the run margin rule. Aubrey Williamson pitched 3.2 innings with four strikeouts and four walks. AP will return to action Wednesday at South Hardin.
