All seven spring sports teams at Aplington-Parkersburg competed Thursday.
In a game that aired on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel, the #12 (1A) girls soccer team defeated GC-GR 8-1. They scored seven goals in the first half, including four in a span of four minutes beginning at the 16:37 mark. The offense slowed a bit in the second half and they gave up a late goal, though the result was never in question. Junior Kiara Morris says they had a focused approach.
“We knew that we couldn’t underestimate them, and they were undefeated going into this game,” Morris says. “So right away we had the intensity, and I think that’s what helped us go from the start because right away like within the first couple minutes we were scoring, so I think that’s what impacted it.”
“I can’t say enough good things about just how the girls went out there and competed,” Head Coach Cory Goetsch says. “That win, they were just driving down the field, coming at all kinds of different angles, setting up the crosses, the plays, everything. It was really just an amazing performance by those girls. They looked great out there. We kind of had a good idea what to look for, how to break down their defense ahead of time. The girls really did a good job of executing that plan, finding those opportunities and just finishing it in front of the net. And we were just getting a lot of opportunities with the second shots and just bringing it down and continuing to hammer and get that ball in front of that goal.”
Morris, Adri Allan and Lorna Bernard each scored twice. Elise Thome and Ciara Troyna recorded single tallies.
