The Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls soccer team built on last week’s win with a 2-1 victory over Wright County on Monday night.
The Bulldogs struck early when Brissa Rojas found the back of the net with 29:46 remaining in the first half. Both teams generated multiple scoring chances the rest of the half. Victoria Flomo created several opportunities for the Bulldogs, but Broncos goalkeeper Lily Pigman limited the damage to one goal before halftime.
On the other end, Hampton-Dumont-CAL goalkeeper Madison Heilskov turned away several shots from Wright County forward Jany Mejia, keeping the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 at the break.
Wright County’s Treisy Mejia scored the equalizer early in the second half, and the match remained tied until late. With five minutes remaining, Bulldog forward Sofia Gutierrez netted the game-winner on a shot that glanced off Pigman’s hand and deflected into the net.
Rojas says the Bulldogs’ communication and energy were key factors in the win.
“I really like the amount of communication that was on the field, and again the passing up and down the field,” Rojas says. “I love that, and I love just the cheering we had for one another the whole game. We were just uplifting and great attitude all around.”
With the loss, Wright County fell to 0-5-2 on the season. As the Broncos search for their first win, Mejia says the team remains focused on effort and supporting one another.
“Just always encouraging each other up, being there for each other,” Mejia says. “And I know we might not have the best game sometimes, but being there and not giving up, just trying our best every single time, being there, not giving up on yourself, not giving up on the team. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for the rest of your team.”
The Bulldogs will play Clear Lake next, while the Broncos will face Iowa Falls-Alden.
