State leaders gathered Friday, April 24, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds to mark Arbor Day by planting Iowa’s official America250 tree, launching a statewide effort to recognize the nation’s 250th birthday.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig started the initiative in partnership with Iowa 4-H and Iowa FFA. The program will include planting 250 trees in communities across Iowa.
The official tree, a bur oak, was planted south of the Administration Building near the Bill Riley Stage at the State Fairgrounds. Iowa 4-H and FFA members helped with the planting.
The tree will be marked with an America250 plaque and is intended to serve as a living symbol of stewardship, service and Iowa’s agricultural heritage.
The initiative is supported by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers and Frazier Nursery, which provided the bur oak planted at the State Fairgrounds.
