gavel-court

A Waterloo man has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison on a firearm charge.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa says 22-year-old Dearion Deshawn Newman was sentenced May 13 in Cedar Rapids to 37 months in prison after pleading guilty in December to possession of a firearm by a felon.

Prosecutors say Newman was in a vehicle with three other people, including two juveniles, on May 11, 2025. Law enforcement officers identified the occupants as members of a hybrid criminal street gang in Waterloo. Officers recovered four guns in and around the vehicle. Newman admitted to possessing a loaded gun found under the vehicle, and prosecutors say his DNA was found on the gun.

Newman was on state probation at the time for possession of a firearm by a felon and interference with official acts with a firearm. His federal sentence will run consecutively to his state sentence.

Newman must also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term.

The case was investigated by a federal task force made up of the Waterloo Police Department, FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar Falls Police Department.
