Iowa’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.3 percent in April, signaling stability even as the state’s total workforce experienced minor shifts.

According to Iowa Workforce Development, the state’s jobless rate is down slightly from 3.6 percent recorded one year ago, and remains well below the national rate of 4.3 percent. While the total number of working Iowans dropped by 2,800 over the month, Iowa establishments still managed to add 3,400 jobs to the economy.

State officials noted that the spring monthly gains were primarily driven by stronger-than-expected hiring in the leisure and hospitality industry, alongside modest increases in healthcare, manufacturing, and construction. However, retail trade and professional services suffered losses.

Over the past year, Iowa has shed 15,100 nonfarm jobs, led largely by declines in trade and transportation. Despite the annual drop, workforce officials emphasize that nearly 55,000 open positions remain available statewide.
