An Iowa soldier is among six American service members killed Sunday in Kuwait. 20-year old Sergeant Declan Coady of West Des Moines, died in what the U.S. military described as a drone strike on a tactical operations center at a civilian port. Coady was an Army Reservist assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command based at Fort Des Moines. Three other soldiers from the Des Moines-based unit — from Florida, Bellevue, Nebraska, and White Bear Lake, Minnesota — were also killed in the attack.

According to a report from Radio Iowa, Coady enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2023 as an information technology specialist. He was also a sophomore at Drake University, studying information systems, cybersecurity and computer science. University officials said he was a dedicated student with a promising future.

Iowa’s government leaders have responded following the announcement as well. Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst praised the service and sacrifice of the soldiers, and Governor Kim Reynolds urged Iowans to keep Coady’s family in their prayers.
