United, Falcons each win in soccer DH

The AP/DNH and Aplington-Parkersburg soccer teams each won in a doubleheader in New Hartford Thursday. In games that aired on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel, the United defeated New Hampton 10-0 and the #15 (1A) Falcons beat #12 (1A) Dike-New Hartford 4-0.

In the boys game, the United took 12 minutes to score their first goal. But they came in rapid succession after that. Aiden Merrill scored three, all in the first half to lead the way. They also had first half goals by Dax Weedman, Conner Weedman, Zion Uhlenhopp, Max Cummings and Parker Mulder. After leading 8-0 at halftime, Cummings added another and Levi Folkerts put in the final goal with 31:39 left to seal the win. Folkerts says they were efficient after a slower start.

They’ll return to action Friday at defending 2A champion Gilbert at 7:00 p.m.

The Falcons dominated possession time throughout the game to create several scoring opportunities. Lorna Bernard connected on two goals in the first half, with a header goal by Adri Allan for a 3-0 halftime lead. After stout defense kept the Wolverines off the board, Shelby Arkulari finished the scoring by connecting on a shot with 12 minutes to play. Senior Elise Thome.

Head Coach Cory Goetsch says the team played with a good rhythm.

Emma Haan recorded four saves. DNH’s Jaden Zedeker had 10 saves.

AP will return to action Friday at Wright County. DNH will host #5 (1A) Center Point-Urbana Monday.
