The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows boys track and field team will travel to Garner on Tuesday to compete in the GHV Cardinal Relays.
Weather has forced the cancellation of several meets for the Cowboys this season, but Head Coach Cory Yoder says the extra practice time has helped his freshman-heavy team continue to develop.
“We are a very, very young team. I have 15 freshmen out along with six juniors and six sophomores and no seniors,” Yoder says. “So we’re very, very young, but I’m super happy the way the freshmen have come along, especially with almost all these meets being canceled and almost having a lot more practice time than normal. But the last few meets have been very, very good. Our freshmen have taken off.”
With state qualifying meets approaching, Huxley Lingenfelter gives the Cowboys their most experienced postseason contender after qualifying for state last season. Lingenfelter has had a strong season in the discus, while the sprint medley and distance medley relay teams have shown steady improvement. Logan Torsell in the 800-meter run and the Cowboys’ 4×100-meter relay team could also work their way into qualifying contention with continued improvement.
While Yoder already considers this season a success, he says qualifying a relay team for state would make it even better.
“I have a successful ending right now, but even to make it even better is if we get a relay to the state meet,” Yoder says. “I don’t know when the last time CGD has had a state relay down there. It’s been quite a while.”
The meet begins at 4:30 p.m.
